Frequently asked questions

  • Digital Voice for Business is a virtual phone system that’s hosted in the cloud. That means you get all the functionality of a traditional telephony system, but with the flexibility to do more.

  • Calls are placed over the internet rather than using a traditional phone line. That means you don’t need to worry about the setup and maintenance of a phone system, and your team can make and receive calls no matter where they are.

  • Make Digital Voice work for you by choosing the right package for each of your users based on their needs. Then decide how you want them to take their calls, do they need a handset on a desk or a cordless phone or would they prefer a softphone to use on their laptop/PC/Smartphone if so you should consider a headset. You don’t need to worry about call charges as all our packages include free calls to UK landline and mobiles. Getting set up is as easy as logging into the portal and downloading your softphone or plugging in your handsets.

  • Not necessarily. A standard broadband connection may be enough. The speed you need depends on how many people will be using the system.

  • BT Digital Voice can be supported on any internet connection with sufficient bandwidth. We would always recommend BTnet or BT Business fibre broadband. Here’s why:

    • When your access and Digital Voice for Business service is both provided by BT we have optimised both our products to work better together from the start. And you’ll only have one supplier to work with.
    • We’ll make sure your calls get top priority over your internet traffic on our connections, so you’ll always get great quality calls.
    • Our internet connections come with built-in security and 24/7 monitoring to make sure you stay safe – and connected – at all times.
    • Our network has ultra-low latency which is vital for making the most of voice applications like BT Digital Voice. Better still, it’s guaranteed by our service level agreement.
  • No. As long as you have enough bandwidth, you can use Digital Voice for Business on your existing connection.

If you’re considering a new broadband service, we can help you choose the right package from our range of fibre broadband and BTnet leased lines.

  • No — quite the opposite. Digital Voice for Business gives you HD-quality calls for a clear, reliable connection.

  • Number porting means moving an existing phone number to a new service. There are two types:

Port-In: You’re moving your number from another provider to BT.

Number Transfer: You’re already with BT and want to move your number from one BT service to another, like from copper phone line to Digital Voice. Learn more about number porting here.

  • Yes. With an International Calling Plan, you can choose from 100, 500 or 1,000 international calling minutes per month to call supported international destinations only. (See the supported countries below). These minutes are shared across all users on your account.

For a fixed monthly fee, you can make calls to supported international destinations using your monthly allowance. Premium rate numbers, satellite services and other special service numbers aren't included.

If you use all your included minutes before the end of the month, standard international call charges will apply. You can find full pricing details in the BT Price List. We'll send usage alerts when you've used 80% and 100% of your monthly allowance.

  • If a country isn't included in the International Calling Plan, standard international call charges will apply.

    The following destinations aren't included:

    Afghanistan Greenland Niger
    Albania Guinea Niue Island
    Angola Guinea-Bissaue Palau
Antarctica Australian Territory Guyana Papua New Guinea
    Armenia Haiti Ross Island
    Ascension Island Iran Rwanda

Belarus Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire) São Tomé and Príncipe

    Bosnia Kosovo Seychelles
    Burkina Faso Kyrgyzstan Sierra Leone
    Burundi Lesotho Solomon Island
    Cape Verde Liberia Somalia

    Ethiopia Monserrat Uganda
    Falkland Islands Montenegro Vanuatu
    Fiji Myanmar Wallis & Futuna
    Gabon Nauru Yemen
    Gambia New Caledonia Zambia
    Ghana Nicaragua Zimbabwe
  • Each user receives a phone number with their package, but shared business services and call routing features like hunt groups and auto attendant require an additional number for each.

You can also use additional numbers for certain departments, call queues, or to use specific local numbers for certain areas.

For example, you run a real estate business that handles lettings and sales across Leeds and York:

    • Hunt Groups forward sales and customer service calls. You might have 2 additional numbers: one for the lettings team and the other for the sales team.

    • Auto Attendants for IVR (Interactive Voice Response) layers. You might have 2 additional numbers.

Layer 1: Press 1 for lettings or 2 for sales.

Layer 2: Press 2 for sales in Leeds and 2 for sales in York.

    • The total additional numbers requires is 4. This is due to the 2 hunt groups and 2 auto attendants.
