Connecting your phones
As Digital Voice runs over IP, all devices must be connected to the internet. You can connect phones directly via an Ethernet port, or connect to Wi-Fi if your signal is strong enough.
You can plug phones into your router or hub, a Local Area Network (LAN) switch, or any active cabling that is connected to your broadband or access product. For devices that connect to
Wi-Fi, we recommend checking the signal strength using your mobile phone to make sure full strength is available.
Have a think about which option you have and what to use for your business, so you can select the right devices for you. Any internal cabling would need to exist or being provided separately as it is not provided as part of Digital Voice for Business service.

Webex and Digital Voice for Business
Digital Voice for Business is run on the Webex platform, and all packages come with Webex voice and collaboration applications included as standard. This is an an ideal solution for small to medium businesses with built-in security and the opportunity for growth.
Both Enhanced and Extra packages include the Webex Softphone app, which allows you to make and receive calls on your business number from any device - perfect for hybrid working.
Extra packages also include Webex Basic with additional collaboration capabilities, including the ability to use Chat and Meetings for internal or external collaboration with voice and video calling.
Digital Voice for Business is a virtual phone system that’s hosted in the cloud. That means you get all the functionality of a traditional telephony system, but with the flexibility to do more.
How does calling work?
Calls are placed over the internet rather than using a traditional phone line. That means you don’t need to worry about the set-up and maintenance of a phone system, and your team can make and receive calls no matter where they are.
How to use Digital Voice for Business?
Make Digital Voice work for you by choosing the right package for each of your users based on their needs. Then decide how you want them to take their calls, do they need a handset on a desk or a cordless phone or would they prefer a softphone to use on their laptop/PC/Smartphone if so you should consider a headset. You don’t need to worry about call charges as all our packages include free calls to UK landline and mobiles. Getting set up is as easy as logging into the portal and downloading your softphone or plugging in your handsets.
Do I need a fibre connection?
Not necessarily. A standard broadband connection may be enough. The speed you need depends on how many people will be using the system.
What’s the ideal connection for BT Digital Voice?
BT Digital Voice can be supported on any internet connection with sufficient bandwidth. We would always recommend BTnet or BT Business fibre broadband. Here’s why:
When your access and Digital Voice for Business service is both provided by BT we have optimised both our products to work better together from the start. And you’ll only have one supplier to work with.
We’ll make sure your calls get top priority over your internet traffic on our connections, so you’ll always get great quality calls.
Our internet connections come with built-in security and 24/7 monitoring to make sure you stay safe – and connected – at all times.
Our network has ultra-low latency which is vital for making the most of voice applications like BT Digital Voice. Better still, it’s guaranteed by our service level agreement.
Do I need BT Business Broadband to use Digital Voice for Business?
No. As long as you have enough bandwidth, you can use Digital Voice for Business on your existing connection.
If you’re considering a new broadband service, we can help you choose the right package from our range of fibre broadband and BTnet leased lines.
Am I going to compromise on quality?
No — quite the opposite. Digital Voice for Business gives you HD-quality calls for a clear, reliable connection.
What is number porting?
Number porting means moving an existing phone number to a new service. There are two types:
Port-In: You’re moving your number from another provider to BT.
Number Transfer: You’re already with BT and want to move your number from one BT service to another, like from copper phone line to Digital Voice. Learn more about number porting here.
