Frequently asked questions

What is a digital phone line?
Why do I need a digital phone line?

The UK's telecoms industry is changing and we’re moving on to full fibre; this means that the old way to make calls over a traditional phone line must change and soon all calls will be made over the internet. The digital switchover is in 2025, but we’re offering solutions now to get you digital ready.

Can I get a digital line?

We’re working hard to get the whole of the UK covered, but it’s still unavailable in some instances. You can see if your address is eligible by putting your details in the availability checker at the top of this page.

So, what is it?

A digital phone line is simply a 'line' to make and receive calls like you’ve always done, but the technology to do so is via your broadband/fibre connection.

Can I use my own phones?

Unfortunately not because traditional phones won’t be compatible, but don’t worry we will send you 1 x new digital phone for free if you purchase one of our digital phone line packages.

What will happen with my new digital phone line if I move?

Because your new number will be internet based you can take your number wherever you go, you’d simply need to inform us when and where you move to. It may take different forms, but you’ll no longer be tied to a specific exchange area.

Why is a digital phone line better?

You get all of the calling features included in the package that can be chargeable on traditional packages, you can manage your calls remotely for a more flexible and productive business day and it allows us to provide you with a dedicated internet connection to get you the fastest speeds physically possible at your location.

Is it easy to set up and use?

It’s extremely simple; your smart hub and office extras are plug and play and instead of plugging a phone into a socket on your wall, you plug your phone into the back of the smart hub. The making and receiving of calls is identical but you have the additional portals and apps available to you. We have dedicated help guides and teams on standby to help you if you’re stuck, and lots of self-install content when your order is placed.

Are you digital ready?
Can I use an EPOS system with a digital line?

You can only currently use a system that runs over the internet and is not dependent on a phone number. Your digital phone line will not be compatible currently with restaurant and takeaway systems used to remember customers details or previous orders on the back of a telephone or online order.

Can I have an alarm with a digital phone line?

The alarm companies are now selling systems that do not rely on a traditional phone line, they can run off your internet connection or supply you with a system that runs over the mobile network. You’d need to ensure that any alarm you currently have or intend to purchase is the newer technology and is not dependent on a traditional analogue phone line.

Can I run a personal care system or pendant on a digital line?

Personal care systems and pendants that do not rely on a phone line are OK, however if your current or intended care alarm requires the use of a phone line then a digital line is currently not compatible with these products; please ensure you check this before ordering.

Can I have a digital line in a lift?

A digital line is not suitable for a lift service. Please contact your lift company for advice on alternative SIM based solutions or alternatively you will have to order a traditional phone line.

Can I run a card machine (PDQ) on a digital line?

Payment systems have moved on significantly in recent years, as long as you ensure your terminal runs over the internet or mobile network and is NOT reliant on a traditional phone line. A digital line will not prevent you from taking payments and the problems with blocked payments.

Can I run my London Oyster card machine over a digital phone line?

The digital line is not currently compatible with this system, this is currently only compatible with a traditional phone line.

Will my existing extensions work on the digital line?

No, your traditional extensions will no longer work: if you require additional phones to run off of your new digital line, you can purchase an additional handset as an extension to your line for £75 + VAT later if required.

Are there any other products I need to check are compatible before I buy?

Yes, other more traditional 3rd party products like fax, franking, gate entry, magnified bells used in warehouses and loud environments, older alarm/card payment/care/lift that may rely on a traditional (PSTN) phone line should be checked before purchase. All industries must align to the UK's telecoms evolution to digital so products are currently available now. If you need to check simply contact your specific supplier of the service and check its compatibility.

What is a traditional phone line?
Can I still get a traditional line?

Yes you can, if you have a current dependency on a product that is not yet compatible with a digital phone line you will still be able to purchase a traditional phone line but you will have to migrate in the future.

I only want Broadband; do I need a phone line too?

Depending on what's available at your address you may still need to have a traditional phone line. This could be due to compatibility with 3rd party products, but also that you are not yet in a full fibre area. If you are still in an area where your fibre is delivered from a fibre cabinet, it's only possible to supply this over a phone line.

Do you get a phone included on traditional phone packages?

No, you are free to purchase your own phone. All-inclusive phones are only supplied with digital phone line packages.

If I change my address can I keep my number?

If you move within the same exchange area you can move like for like in technology terms. However, if you move out of the allocated exchange area, we can supply you with a digital solution to ensure you keep your number and never face this issue again. The solution may vary based on your needs and availability, but we will be able to offer you a way to retain your number.

Ordering with us for the first time or switching from another supplier
How do I know I am placing the right order?

It’s very simple, have a look at our deals, enter your address and number if you have one already, and complete the order form. That’s it.

If you are looking to keep an existing number, whether it's with another supplier or with BT under a different name, you will be able to input this number in the ordering process and we will let you know if we need anything else.

If you are looking to change your existing package, chat to the sales teams and we'll work out the best solution is for you.

I am not sure on the switching processes as I am coming from a cable operator

Switching types

There are two supplier switching types: “Gaining Provider Led” which is what is described above, you provide us with the address and telephone number that you wish to move to BT and we do it all for you.

You can also “Cease and Re-provide”, this could be when you're currently using services that are not yet switchable through the Gaining Provider Led process, and you may or may not wish to retain your number, or you are coming from a Cable Network and do not wish to retain your number.

  • Switching Bundled Services

You may have a phone line, internet with alternative services in your package. Alternatives like TV packages or access to video and audio streaming services. Any products that are associated to your current deal may be at risk of disconnection or price increase as a result of you removing the phone and internet elements of this bundle.

Speak to your provider if you wish to switch for advice on the process to follow for services in a bundle to pricing implications and your obligations to disconnect these services.
  • Unwanted Services

If you are switching your phone number and internet service from your current supplier and deem that you no longer need telecoms services on another number or circuit, the Gaining Provider Led process will not disconnect any unwanted services that do not relate to the order to switch.

Exit Charges

If you are switching your phone number and internet service, your current supplier should notify you if any charges are applicable. If you are following the Cease and Re-provide process, then you’ll need to contact your current supplier for advice on any charges that you may be liable for.

What information will I need?

Nice and easy, what you want and where you want it. We may also need…

  • Your company details - if you are stuck on your business type, we have a help guide to assist
  • Your contact details for the account and set up, install and deliveries
  • We may need personal details to carry out credit checks if appropriate
  • Your payment details which are encrypted securely for your protection
How will I know if an engineer is needed?

We will let you know - we can check what is and isn't live within your location and identify the quickest and best way to provide your service.

Why is there an installation charge when there is already a socket there?

A socket is not always an indicator that there is a stopped/dormant service - if the address shows stopped service we will use this, if the address shows no active or stopped services then additional work may be needed within the exchange, network or cabinets to provide your service.

How long does switching take?

Switching supplier takes a minimum of 10 working days.

How long can an installation take?

The lead time for Broadband to be connected with a line is around 14 working days, but if you have Hybrid Backup, you can get connected and soon as the following day via EE’s network. Full Fibre can be installed sooner but this depends on Engineer availability and the level of infrastructure available at your property; we’ll show the available dates and time slots in the order journey.

When will I get my first bill?

This depends on a number of factors, so we can't give you an exact timeframe, however you should expect to receive this usually within 7 days of your full service going live . *not 7 days after receiving your Hybrid Backup device.

What will my first bill look like?

Your first bill will usually have your first full monthly/quarterly charge, with a smaller partial period on top. Plus, you will be invoiced if there are any delivery, install or set up charges on this same bill.

What is Broadband and Fibre?
What kind of fibre can I get?

Based on your address we’ll either supply you with Fibre that comes to your property via a cabinet and copper or full fibre. We’ll work out what you can get at the time you place your order and display the appropriate packages and speeds available to you.

How fast can my fibre go?

Based on what way we need to get the fibre service to your property you will have an option to choose the highest speed possible. If you are full fibre you could potentially have up to 900Mbps.

I need a dedicated secure fibre connection, above the standard option.

If you don't want to share the network with anyone else, and need faster connectivity, then our leased line service providing dedicated internet access might be for you.
