The overview

With a heritage that dates back over 200 years, Lord's is the world's most iconic cricket ground. So when it was time to look towards their digital future, they needed a partner who could help them improve connectivity, support innovation, and enhance experiences for staff and visitors. That's where BT came in.

As much a stage for players as it is sacred ground for fans, MCC holds itself to the highest standards as the ‘home of cricket’. While its connectivity needs continued to evolve with the digital age, they were looking for a partner to help strengthen their infrastructure and aid in their digital transformation.

We worked closely with MCC to understand their needs and requirements, using our knowledge, expertise and the range of our capabilities to help bolster the ground’s basics. From streamlining processes and enhancing customer experiences to improving reliability and enabling integration of future technologies, we wanted to help them continue to deliver as the greatest ground. And, just as importantly, ensure the magic of cricket continued to thrive at Lord's as well.

The human side of every part of a business is important and, for us, working with great partners was the key reason. Beyond the strength of BT’s brand or reputation, it was the people and the day-to-day contact we have with them that appealed to us.

The challenge

Lord's has witnessed countless memorable moments in cricket history and it has to remain the best venue in the world to experience cricket to retain its status. Whether you're sat in the stands or on your sofa, its unique heritage and rich stories deserve to be enjoyed and shared by future generations.

Their previous technology created inefficiencies which they didn't have the right support to be able to address. They needed an innovation partner who could not only handle the basics, building a strong foundation for operations, but also open up the possibility for more.

To move forward, their platforms needed to be made more reliable, secure, and future-proofed to meet their digital ambitions over the coming years. Especially on major match days that are televised around the world.

MCC needed a trusted partner with scale, expertise, and a customer-centric approach. One with a reputation for reliability and excellence, who would take the time to understand the needs of everyone involved, their passion for the sport, and the importance of Lord's to further amplify cricket on a global scale.

The solution

To start with, we overlaid a modern skeleton on the old ground and got to know the stakeholders across a number of departments. Between the IT, Partnership, Operations and Events teams, we developed a better understanding of how we could deliver a reliable and efficient new solution. As we interacted more, we developed a collaborative partnership. Regular meetings, either held face to face or through Microsoft Teams where possible, were not only crucial in further uncovering their needs, challenges and ambitions, but also in building trust too.

Having a greater understanding allowed us to assign the right experts to advise and implement the solutions. We impressed MCC by going above and beyond what they expected from us, showcasing different innovations, technologies and partners they weren't aware of.

We further aided an excellent working relationship by providing a single point of contact. This gave MCC dedicated, on-hand support, enabling us to respond quickly to questions and queries. Having such a responsive contact and easy access to technical assistance offered them more reassurance in the process.

To date, we've provided BTnet, EE SIMs, Microsoft 365 licences and Copilot for staff. This gave them the infrastructure they needed to solve real-world challenges through innovation. BTnet provides staff with fast, reliable internet connectivity, ensuring match-day technology runs seamlessly, and enables smarter collaboration through Microsoft 365's suite. And with integrated security to defend against existing and emerging threats, they can feel confident that their business remains protected with further advancements in cyber security planned.

Our business mobile solution for MCC went beyond the supply of devices and plans – we created a mobile strategy to keep teams connected and protected, which allowed senior staff to manage it with ease.

Overall, this has streamlined internal processes, delivered better experiences and provided a stable infrastructure that will fulfil today's needs, with the flexibility to add innovative technologies in the future.

The result

A world-class cricket venue, renowned for its tradition and history, is now fortified by improved connectivity and digital tools, enabling better experiences for staff and visitors for years to come. This includes faster customer support, improved staff communications, and greater efficiency for the IT team.

What truly stood out, however, was the partnership built between BT and MCC. More than our scale, assets, expertise and reputation, it was our people that made the biggest impression. Offering real, human connection that makes our position as their official Connectivity Partner even stronger.

Through our partnership, we've set a solid and reliable foundation to build on, allowing Lord's historic experience to be brought into the future. As such, we continue to work behind the scenes and play a key role in MCC's mobility roadmap. This includes working with them to develop security services for MCC, helping them to establish their AI journey and the role it'll play, improving 5G capabilities and implementing network slicing. Our partnership enhances their ability to adopt new technologies, helping deliver even better experiences for customers, fans and employees.

Lord's traditions are now supported by our innovations. Respecting its past, and securing its future.

BT as a connectivity partner have been fantastic. They've definitely been a step up. They're helping us shape a brighter future for our experiences here at Lord's. I couldn't speak highly enough of how we regard them.
