What's more, it means less money spent on hardware and maintenance. And best of all, BT IP Communications offers total flexibility. You can take and manage calls from your desk phone, desktop and mobile. So you'll never miss an important call.

10 top questions about our cloud-based VoIP phone systems

1. What is a cloud-based VoIP system?

Read the answer here

What we mean by cloud-based is that your call routing takes place in our secure data centre that's connected to the internet, rather than a bulky piece hardware installed in your building.

VoIP is the technology that converts your calls into data and sends them over the internet, instead of a traditional landline.

Putting these together means that you get a phone system with lower upfront costs, fixed monthly pricing, and automatic updates with maintenance included. Plus, the phone system easily grows as your business does and can be managed from anywhere through our online portal.

2. Are VoIP calls good quality?

Read the answer here

You'll get the same level of clarity as a regular landline. And depending on the set-up of your system, you may even get to experience High Definition calls.

We achieve this by understanding how many people could be on the phones at the same time and how much internet data you use. Then, taking both in to account, we recommend the right phone system to give you a consistent level of call quality.

The technology does the rest. Crucially, your calls are prioritised over data. Plus, all the equipment we supply, including the BT Business hub, IP phones and a Local Area Network if you need one, have been designed and tested to work in harmony with a BT Business internet connection.

3. What's the minimum internet speed I need?

Read the answer here

You might think fibre broadband is needed, but not always. Surprisingly a VoIP call only uses a fraction of your broadband's capacity.

To give you an idea: BT Cloud Phone, which is designed for smaller businesses, can comfortably support up to 4 people on the phone at the same time. That's when used with our standard BT Business broadband. And for larger businesses, BT Cloud Voice can support between 6 and 14 people.

But which speed is right for you will depend on how much data your business uses and how many people will be on the phone at the same time.

You don't need to worry about this though. No order is placed until we've talked through and understood the needs of your business.

4. How does a cloud-based phone system work with my mobile?

Read the answer here

There's a really smart feature that lets you set your mobile to ring whenever your office phone does. It helps if you've just popped away from your desk or even if you're out of the office.

But the best way is by using the mobile app, which turns your mobile into an extension of your phone system. It gives you lots of the same functionality you get on your office phone, like being able to see when people are available to talk, set-up call routing and passing calls between colleagues. Basically the mobile app lets you control your phone system and manage your calls from your mobile, wherever you are.

5. How reliable are cloud-based phone systems?

Read the answer here

Our cloud-based phone systems are hosted in multiple secure data centres - each in a different location. So in the unlikely event that one of them has a problem, another takes over.

If your calls go over our BT Business broadband or fibre broadband networks, these are 99.99% reliable. Or if you're making calls over a dedicated BTnet internet connection, you'll get money back if this isn't available 100% of the time.

But let's say your internet connection does have an off day. You can take your IP phones, plug them into another broadband service and carry on as normal, using the same number*. And when things are up and running, re-connect your phones as before and you're back in business with high quality phone calls.

Or simply re-direct your calls to any other landline or mobile through the online portal.

NOTE:
*We can only support your cloud-based VoIP phone system when used with the BT Business equipment and internet connection it's been set-up to work with.

6. How easy is it to set up and what support do I get?

Read the answer here

Our aim is to make set-up as simple as possible with a dedicated team of experts on hand to help if needed.

For smaller businesses there's our BT Cloud Phone system. It's a simple plug and play option where phones arrive ready to go. Just connect things together and that's it.

For larger businesses, BT Cloud Voice is better suited. It's also designed to install yourself, but you've got the option for us to pop in and set it up if you prefer.

If you need one of our Local Area Networks to connect all your phones together, we'll always install this for you.

Regardless of whether you set up your phone system or we do it, we'll be in touch to make sure you're up and running and everything's working as it should be.

7. Is a cloud based VoIP phone system secure?

Read the answer here

Security is absolutely crucial. That's why our VoIP phone systems are hosted in data centres that undergo robust audits and all information is encrypted to keep it safe. These data centres are the same ones that host some of the world's largest internet companies and financial institutions. With everything from firewalls to intrusion detection systems all your data is protected from cyber-attacks and unauthorised access.

So you've no need to worry.

8. What equipment do I need?

Read the answer here

First you'll need a BT internet connection - so broadband or fibre broadband - and the BT Business hub* that comes with it. Or, if you're a larger business, a dedicated BTnet connection and its own equipment may be needed.

Next, choose from our range of IP phones*. If you want to make calls through your computer - a headset and microphone that plugs into your PC is needed.

If you're ordering lots of phones, you'll need a Local Area Network. This connects all of them together into one phone system and is something we can supply and install for you.

If you want to use a standard phone or even a fax machine, we provide an Analogue Terminal Adapter*. It simply connects to your BT Business hub or Local Area Network - just plug your standard phone in and use as normal.

NOTE:
*The models of phones and equipment shown may vary and change from time to time.
