What is a BT Business spend cap and how do I set a spend cap?

A spend cap is a limit on how much you can spend on top of your monthly plan. Choosing this option is the simple way to avoid unexpected bills each month.

You can set a BT Business spend cap when you buy a mobile phonemobile broadbandtablet or SIM-only plan, or upgrade or renew one of these plans.

When you're getting close to your spend cap, we'll send you a BT spend cap alert text to let you know.

You can then decide to limit your usage, or get in touch to increase or remove your spend cap, before you reach your chosen amount.

What charges are covered by a BT Business spend cap?

This usage will count towards your out-of-plan spend cap:

  • UK voice calls
  • UK text messages
  • UK picture messages
  • UK data
  • Calling abroad
  • Roaming
  • Access charges for premium numbers and numbers beginning with 09, 118, 084, 087, 070
  • Premium rate texts sent from your mobile

Once a BT Business spend cap limit is reached, any further 'out of allowance' usage will be limited.

In some instances, usage may be limited for allowances that have not been fully consumed. For international and roaming Extras, we won't restrict usage when calls are made within the allowances. But if international or roaming usage outside of an allowance is used, we may apply a restriction at that point which would include all international or roaming usage, even that included as part of an Extra. Except 'Roam like at home', where you'll continue to be able to make international calls. Below are a list of such impacted Extras/Allowances:

  • Business Zone Data Pass
  • World Zone Extra
  • Business Zone Extra

International Calling Extras:

  • USA& Canada Calling Extra
  • Europe Zone Calling Extras
  • Business Zone Calling Extras
  • World Zone Calling Extras
  • Europe, USA and Canada Calling Extras

Are there any charges not included in a BT Business spend cap?

Yes. This usage won't count towards your out-of-plan spend cap:

  • Monthly plan charges, and other recurring charges
  • Buying extras, like extra minutes, extra data or TNT Sports
  • Service charges for premium numbers and numbers beginning with 09, 118, 084, 087, 070
  • Premium rate texts you receive
  • Insurance
  • Admin fees

This usage will be billed, even if a BT Business spend cap is in place.

How do I set a spend cap?

It's easy to set a BT Business spend cap when you buy a mobile phonemobile broadbandtablet or SIM-only plan.

  1. Choose your device
  2. Choose your plan
  3. When asked if you want to set a spend cap, tick the box
  4. Choose your spend cap from the options in the drop-down
  5. Continue to buy your device - and the spend cap will be set on top of your plan

You can set an out-of-plan spend cap from this wide range of amounts:

  • £0 spend cap
  • £5 spend cap
  • £10 spend cap
  • £20 spend cap
  • £30 spend cap
  • £40 spend cap
  • £50 spend cap
  • £75 spend cap
  • £100 spend cap
  • £150 spend cap
  • £200 spend cap
  • Unlimited spend cap

Choosing a £0 spend cap can help limit your spend to in-plan use only each month.

Setting an unlimited spend cap is the same as having no spend cap on your out-of-plan use.

All other amounts are on top of your plan - so choosing a £10 spend cap, for example, will allow you spend £10 extra each month before your usage is limited.

When can I set a spend cap?

You can set a BT Business spend cap when you buy a mobile phonemobile broadbandtablet or SIM-only plan after 01/10/2018.

You can also set a spend cap if you renew or upgrade one of these plans after 01/10/2018.

What happens if I get near to my spend cap?

We'll text you when your usage reaches 80% of your spend cap.

So if you've chosen a spend cap of £10, for example, we'll send you a BT spend cap alert text when you've used up £8 of the spend cap that month.

You can then decide to limit your usage for the rest of the month, or contact us to increase or remove your spend cap.

What happens if I hit my BT Business spend cap?

To help you avoid getting a bill for any costs that you didn't expect, your usage for included types of charges will be limited if you reach your spend cap.

For example, you won't be able to make any more calls to premium rate numbers that month.

But don't worry. We'll send you a text to let you know when you've reached your cap, and you can contact us if you want to increase or remove your BT Business spend cap.

How do I change or remove a spend cap?

Please contact us if you need to set a different BT Business spend cap, or allow unlimited out-of-plan usage.

Can I set different spend caps for different devices?

Yes. If you buy more than one device, you can choose a different spend cap for each one.
