How to use BT broadband speed tests

We’ve got different BT broadband speed tests for our different hubs. So first we need to know which hub you’ve got. Find out your hub.

BT broadband speed test using a different checker

Don’t have a Smart Hub 2 or a Smart Hub? Test your broadband speed using the BT Wholesale speed tester.

  1. Connect your device to your hub using an Ethernet cable.
  2. Make sure nobody else is using your network while the test is running.
  3. Close down all of your applications so you only have one browser window open.
  4. In the open window open the BT Wholesale speed tester.
  5. Run through the on-screen check list.
  6. Select Yes to confirm you've completed all the steps.
  7. Select Go to run the test.

You'll get your speed test results after a few minutes, with comments about the test and links to further information. Because internet speed can vary, your result is a snapshot of the speed at the time you run the test.

What can affect my broadband speed?

Your broadband speed can depend on many factors, including:

  • Line quality.
  • Distance between your broadband or fibre socket and the green street cabinet.
  • Distance of the cabinet to your local telephone exchange.
  • Your hub age and type.
  • Correct installation of any broadband micro-filters.
  • Time of day – especially peak times when there are many users on the network.
  • Lots of people on the same website at the same time.
  • Lots of people using wi-fi at the same time.
  • Ping latency and packet loss.
