There may be times when you need to release a number from a user. Releasing a number keeps the number in your inventory, available for another user.
How to release a number in Teams
If the phone number is not assigned
- Log into the Teams Admin Centre.
- Navigate to Voice, then Phone numbers.
- In the list, click the unassigned phone number.
- On the right‑hand details pane, you will see the Release button, select Release.
If the number is assigned
- Log into the Teams Admin Centre.
- Navigate to Voice, then Phone numbers.
- Select the assigned phone number.
- Select Edit.
- Remove the user.
- Click Apply and confirm.
- After it becomes unassigned, select the number again.
- Now the Release button appears.
- Select Release.
The number will be removed from your tenant.
