Reassigning phone numbers in Operator Connect

To complete the tasks in this article, you’ll need to be an administrator. Learn more about Teams administrator permissions.

When a user leaves your organisation, changes role, or no longer needs a phone number, you can easily reassign their number to someone else.

What you’ll need

  • An available number in your inventory (or an existing number you want to move).
  • The user account you want to assign the number to.

If the number is currently assigned to another user, you must release it from that user first before reassigning it.

Releasing a number from a user

If a number is already assigned, you need to release it first:

  1. Log into Teams Admin Centre.
  2. Select Users.
  3. Choose the user who currently has the number.
  4. Select Account.
  5. Under Phone number, select Remove.
  6. Save changes.

Once removed, the number will return to your available number inventory.

Reassigning a number to a new user

To reassign a number to a new user, please follow the latest Microsoft guidance on Changing a phone number for a user.

If your emergency number is locked or ‘greyed out’, please contact our support team.

Once this step is completed, the number will now be active for the new user.

Reassigning service numbers (Auto Attendants & Call Queues)

Service numbers can be reassigned to different resource accounts that support Auto Attendants and Call Queues. To move a service number:

  1. Log into the Teams Admin Centre.
  2. Select Voice, then Phone numbers.
  3. Filter by Service.
  4. Select the service number you want to reassign.
  5. Choose Edit.
  6. Assign it to a new resource account (Auto Attendant or Call Queue).
  7. Save your changes.

Once updated, the number will route to the new Auto Attendant or Call Queue immediately after Teams finishes syncing.

If a number does not appear in your inventory, contact our support team.
