Keeping or changing your mobile number

If you’re joining or leaving a mobile provider, you’ll need to decide whether you want to keep your existing mobile number or get a new one.

Joining BT Mobile

When you’re joining BT Mobile, you can choose to keep your existing mobile number. This is also called porting. We can also provide you with a new number.

Keeping your mobile number

Keeping your existing mobile number and bringing it with you from another mobile supplier (sometimes called porting) is easy to do. You’ll need a porting authorisation code, or PAC for this.

  • Text the word PAC to the number 65075. Your current provider will reply by text with your PAC.
  • Give the PAC to us when you contact us to switch, and we’ll arrange for you to keep your existing number.

When you receive your PAC, the message will also include any important information about early contract termination charges, outstanding handset costs or pay-as-you-go credit balances.

Switching provider and getting a new mobile number

Changing your mobile number when you join BT Mobile from another provider is straight forward. You just need a service termination authorisation code, or STAC for this.

  • Text the word STAC to the number 75075.
  • Your current provider will reply by text with your STAC.
  • Give the STAC to us when you switch, and we’ll provide you with a new number.

Getting a STAC means you don’t have to speak with your current provider if you just want to leave them.

When you receive your STAC, the message will also include any important information about early contract termination charges, outstanding handset costs or pay-as-you-go credit balances.

On the day you switch to BT

We’ll switch your service to BT on the port date we’ve agreed with you. It’s normal to experience a little disruption on the day, so you may wish to let your important contacts know that you could lose connection for a couple of hours.

However, if there’s a delay to the start of your new BT Mobile service or in porting your existing number to BT, you may be able to claim compensation. More about compensation

Transfer a disconnected mobile number to a new provider

If your mobile number’s been disconnected, you’ll need to move quickly to transfer the number to a new provider. You can only transfer a mobile number up to 31 days after it was disconnected. If you don’t transfer a disconnected number before then, you won’t be able to use it again.

If we disconnected your BT Business mobile but you’d like to switch your number to a new provider, please call us for free on 0800 800152. We’re here to help Monday-Friday 08:00-18:00 (excluding bank holidays).

  • We’ll review your account to make sure we can switch your number.
  • If we can, we’ll text you a PAC free of charge for you to send to your new provider. We’ll ask you for the best contact number to send your PAC to.
  • Make sure you give the PAC to your new provider within 31 days of disconnection.
  • We won’t be able to reactivate any disconnected numbers.
