  • Highly resilient
  • Low latency
  • Dedicated and secure connections
  • New low pricing

What are 'Ethernet connections'?

Ethernet point-to-point (p2p)

  • Connects sites together that are 45km or less apart.
  • Point-to-point direct fibre connections.
  • Lowest possible latency.
  • Standard bandwidths: 10 Mbps; 100 Mbps; 1 Gbps; 10 Gbps; 40 Gbps; 100 Gbps (Larger bandwidths available on request).

  • Ideal for connecting sites locally, like your head office to your local satellite offices, shops, warehouses or datacentre.

Ethernet virtual private network (VPN)

  • Connects multiple sites together nationally.
  • Connect sites how you want: 'hub & spoke'; 'any-to-any'; 'point-to-point'.
  • Less than 10 milliseconds latency target.
  • Only pay for the bandwidth you need: 200 Kbps to 1 Gbps.
  • Range of access technologies and speeds to suit your business.

What do p2p and VPN mean for you?

Forget about distance

Our Ethernet Services can reach 90% of businesses in the UK. And we can connect you internationally, too.

Ethernet networks link your sites together into a single and secure Wide Area Network so they can effectively work as one site.

Stay connected

Delivered over BT's core network, with multiple switching points and dual routing, you'll experience the highest levels of resilience.

Essentially that means your network is available when you need it.

Be agile

Low latency means there's minimal delay between data being sent and received: crucial for VoIP calls and time-sensitive applications like CITRIX and IP CCTV.

And because Ethernet doesn't rely on the Internet you'll get consistent and reliable performance on a totally secure connection.

Relax with no-hassle guarantees

Tough on-time delivery, repair, and service availability guarantees come as standard.

If we don't meet these we'll automatically apply discounts to your connection charges or rental on your next bill. No arguments, no fuss.

Get value for money

We've got discounts on our three and five year point-to-point contracts.

And with Ethernet VPNs, a range of access technologies and choice of bandwidth means you only pay for what you need.

Keep control

You keep ownership and control of your IP architecture (hosting and routing data across the network) so you stay flexible and responsive.

Reconfiguring your VPN network is simple and as it's scalable, you can flex your bandwidth seasonally and add sites as you grow.

Why choose BT for your p2p or VPN?

For the 10th year running, Gartner has positioned BT as a 'Leader' in their Global Network Service Providers 'Magic Quadrant'.**

We're MEF accredited (that's the Metro Ethernet Forum, the 150-strong global industry alliance) and over the last five years we've invested £3.8 billion in research and development.

How do p2p and VPN work?

Ethernet point-to-point

Diagram of point-to-point

This does exactly what it says, directly connecting together sites that are 45km or less apart, using a dedicated fibre optic cable.

This means your sites can effectively work as one.

You'll also see this referred to as a 'Short Haul Data Services'.

Ethernet virtual private network

Diagram of virtual private network

Connects your sites to our core network using a choice of access technologies through our Points of Presence (PoPs) around the country (these are like gateways onto our network).

There are two main components:

  1. Access circuits provide the physical connectivity to BT's network. These can be superfast (Generic Ethernet Access), fibre or copper (Ethernet in the First Mile) and come with a range of resilience options.
  2. Ethernet Virtual Connections (EVCs) define the connectivity between sites (hub and spoke; any-to-any; point-to-point) and allow you to set classes of service to prioritise traffic.

You choose the bandwidth you need, from 200 Kbps to 1 Gbps, and class of service required so you can make sure the service is exactly what you need, when and where you need it.

You'll also see this referred to as 'Ethernet Connect'.

How much does it cost?

Ethernet point-to-point

The cost depends on 3 factors -

  1. Distance
  2. Bandwidth
  3. Contract

Need a ballpark figure?

Just select the distance between the locations that you want to connect, the speed you need, and the contract term you're interested in (hint: you'll get a better deal with a 5-year contract).

Rental prices start at just £2,960.00 + VAT a year for a 100Mbps circuit on a 5-year contract.

  • Connection charge: £000.00
  • Monthly charge: £000.00

The cost depends on 4 factors -

  1. No. premises
  2. Distance
  3. Bandwidth
  4. Access tech

Some costing examples

Don, production manager for a fabrication company

Mad Mantels design, produce and distribute mantelpieces. With premises in Norwich and Truro, both sites need real-time, secure access to stock, order, and design information. The design files are pretty sizeable so Don needs a network that can handle large amounts of data. With the upturn in the housing market, Mad Mantels are looking to set up a third site soon so being able to add a new cost-effective link quickly is a must.

These are indicative examples, actual costs are subject to survey, and will vary.

Number of premises: 2
Locations: Norwich and Truro
Speed required (bandwidth): 2 Mbps
Access technology: Generic Ethernet Access
Connection charge: £660.00 + VAT
Monthly charge: £253.00 + VAT

You can have different bandwidths, and access technologies, at different premises. Please call us on 0800 678 1260 to see how we can help you get what you need.

Solicitors

With offices in Leeds and Glasgow, Peggy needs tip-top audio and video-conferencing so solicitors can effectively discuss cases and share information in a secure environment. Her clients get a much faster service while the firm's partners spend less time (and money) travelling and more time focussing on their cases. She also needs her solicitors at both sites to be able to access the same pricing tool without delay. And that's why an Ethernet connection is top of her IT shopping list.

These are indicative examples, actual costs are subject to survey, and will vary.

Number of premises: 2
Locations: Leeds and Glasgow
Speed required (bandwidth): 10 Mbps
Access technology: Ethernet in the First Mile
Connection charge: £2460.00 + VAT
Monthly charge: £528.00 + VAT

You can have different bandwidths, and access technologies, at different premises. Please call us on 0800 678 1260 to see how we can help you get what you need.

Roger, manager of Sterling Motor Cars

Sterling Motors has branches across Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. Joan, the receptionist, takes all calls at HQ but when she's busy she's missing calls. Roger wants to overflow calls to other branches so they don't lose repair and servicing business. He also needs to book cars in for servicing, check parts availability, and track progress on jobs. Because Ethernet can support multiple voice and data applications, he's planning on using IP Voice to answer customer enquiries quickly and accurately.

These are indicative examples, actual costs are subject to survey, and will vary.

Number of premises: 4
Locations: Bury St Edmunds, Ely and Haverhill
Speed required (bandwidth): 4 Mbps
Access technology: Generic Ethernet Access +
Ethernet in the First Mile
Connection charge: £3440.00 + VAT
Monthly charge: £1237.00 + VAT

You can have different bandwidths, and access technologies, at different premises. Please call us on 0800 678 1260 to see how we can help you get what you need.
