Emergency location settings in Operator Connect (remote US and Canada-based users only)

This guidance only applies to remote users in the United States and Canada.

In the US and Canada, Microsoft Teams must contain your real time physical location for E911 emergency calls.

What is E911?

E911 (Enhanced 911) is an emergency system in the US and Canada that automatically links a 911 caller's phone number to their precise geographic location. It means dispatchers automatically have the caller’s physical address or coordinates (ALI), allowing them to send help immediately if the call drops.

Why is it important for remote users?

If you’re working remotely and outside your organisation’s usual address, Microsoft Teams cannot automatically detect your location, so you must manually update your emergency address to remain compliant.

How to configure E911 in Operator Connect

Learn how to add or change an emergency location and enable access for Enhanced E911.

Enable Teams to access your location

  1. In Settings (gear icon), select Privacy & security.
  2. Then select Location.
  3. Turn on Let apps access your location.
  4. Turn on Let desktop apps access your location.

Add, edit, or reset your emergency location

  1. Open Calls in Microsoft Teams.
  2. Look below the dial pad (or at the bottom of the Calls section in Teams Settings) to view your current emergency location.

To update your emergency location

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Select the Calls section.
  3. Go to the Teams dial pad. You can find this in the top left of the calls screen.
  4. When the location prompt appears, choose one of the following:
    • Add your location. if Teams doesn’t have one saved yet. Enter your full address so emergency services can identify where you are.
    • Confirm the suggested location. if Teams detects your location automatically. Make sure the detected address is accurate before confirming.
    • Edit location. If the address is wrong, select Edit location. Update the address details so they reflect your current physical location.
    • Reset location. If you need to start over, select Reset location. This clears the saved address and allows you to enter or confirm a new one.

Important information

  • You can only edit your emergency location from the Calls section.
  • If location services are off, you won’t be able to confirm your emergency location.
  • Once confirmed, a location is saved and doesn’t need reconfirming when you return to it.
  • When you move to a new physical location, Teams updates your emergency location based on what location services detect.
