Name Servers and how to update them

Nameservers control the DNS records for any domain. By default the name servers for your domain name will be ours and this will allow you and us to control your DNS records.

When a domain with one of these extensions expires:

.info

.com

.net

.biz

.org

.tv

.mobi

The name servers SK.S5.ANS1.NS148.ZTOMY.COM and SK.S5.ANS2.NS148.ZTOMY.COM are applied to the domain’s Whois results.

While a domain is expired its DNS settings (like its www record or MX record) are not active and may cause website content and mailboxes for the domain to stop working.

The name servers will be changed from SK.S5.ANS1.NS148.ZTOMY.COM and SK.S5.ANS2.NS148.ZTOMY.COM back to the original ones and the domains DNS settings re-instated within 24 hours of domain renewal.

Updating the Name Servers on your BT Business hosted domain

If you want to change the Name Servers on a BT Business hosted domain, you'll need to ask our DNS team to do so on your behalf. You can submit your request using either the live chat facility or the Name Server repoint form on our Email, computing & hosting contact page. (You'll soon be able to do this yourself using the domain management portal).

If your domain is fully hosted with BT Business, the DNS team can update the Name Servers on a domain from:

  • dns1.register.com and dns2.register.com to another host
  • another host to a third party
  • another host back to dns1.register.com and dns2.register.com, if you want to move the DNS management of your domain back to BT.

If you’re not using our Name Servers we won’t be able to help make any changes to your DNS records. As such if you wish to continue using our email or web hosting, you’ll need to setup the correct DNS records with whoever owns the new servers.

What happens when I change the Name Server to another host?

The domain itself remains registered through BT Business for renewal. However, the management of the domain's DNS settings (e.g. MX record, A records) is then the responsibility of the host of your new Name Servers.

Any existing DNS settings (for example MX records) you’ve set up on our Name Servers (dns1.register.com and dns2.register.com) won’t work, unless you set them up with the host of your new Name Servers.

If you're changing the Name Servers for web purposes (for example, if you're transferring your website – www.yourdomain.co.uk – to another host), it's important to set up your domain's existing MX record (if any) with the host of the new Name Servers. This will make sure that any existing mailboxes with the suffix @yourdomain continue to work once the change is made.

If you're changing the Name Servers for mail purposes (for example, yourname@yourdomain.co.uk), it's important to set up your domain's existing ‘www' and ‘@' records (if any) with the new Name Servers to make sure your website content is visible via www.yourdomain.co.uk and @yourdomain.co.uk once the change is made.

How do I update the DNS settings on my domain once the Name Servers are changed?

You'll be required to contact the host of your new Name Servers to do so.

If you point the Name Servers on your BT Business hosted domain away from BT, you won't be able to use our domain management portal to save changes to the DNS settings. If you try, you'll receive the following error message:

'Operation not supported for nameservers'.
