What is Fibre Basic and how does it work?

Traditional fixed telephone lines are being phased out and we’re replacing some of these lines with Fibre Basic.

Fibre Basic is the low-data usage service that we’re rolling out to replace traditional fixed telephone lines to support limited approved devices and services that only use a little data. These include alarm lines, lift lines and electronic point of sale (EPOS) systems that run over the internet, or similar services that have been adapted to run over the internet.

Can I use Fibre Basic for everyday internet use?

No, because Fibre Basic is a low-data usage service that only supports limited approved devices and services that only use a little data.

Because download and upload speeds are restricted to less than 0.5 Mbps, Fibre Basic doesn’t have enough bandwidth to be used simultaneously as a low data internet connection and for something like browsing.

If you use it to try and browse the internet, things like your alarm line, lift line or EPOS system that run over Fibre Basic, or similar services that have been adapted to run over the internet, might stop working.
