I’ve just received a call from someone claiming to be from BT – how do I know if this call is genuine?

If you think it’s a scam, hang up

Fraudsters are known to call claiming to be from BT, when it’s actually a scam. If you’re worried the call may not be genuine, simply put the phone down.

Common scams include:

  • Recorded messages telling you your service will be disconnected.
  • Automated messages asking you to press options on your phone to contact BT – you’ll be taken direct to a scammer if you do.

How to tell if it’s a scam call

Fraudsters call to ask for your personal information, get access to your computer and, in some cases, steal your customer base, gain money, or gain information about your customers.

Don’t be fooled. There are some tell-tale things the fraudsters try that BT will NEVER do:

  • Call to say we’ve found a problem with your computer.
  • Call asking for your PIN or online banking password.
  • Call asking you to send money using PayPal or money transfer websites.
  • Call to say your broadband has been hacked.
  • Call to say your hub or IP address has been compromised.
  • Call asking to take control of your computer unprompted (Note if we ever ask to use your computer remotely to fix a fault, it will be because you’ve asked us to do so).

Fraudsters will demand something urgently – by putting people under pressure, scammers can hurry people into being fooled.

Fraudsters will use phrases like ‘we’re calling from your service provider’ to try to trick people into revealing more information.

But because BT is a large provider, scammers have tried saying they’re from BT in the hope of speaking to a BT customer.

Because of this, it’s even more important you’re vigilant.

NEVER give personal details over the phone to someone you’re not sure about.

And if you have any doubt the call is genuine, please put the phone down. We’ll understand your security concerns and will be happy for you to call us when you’re ready to do so.
