How do I transfer my domain away from BT Business?

If you want to transfer your domain to another registrar, you can request this using live chat or the transfer out form.

If you'd like to update the Name Servers on your domain to your new hosts, you need to do this prior to the IPS tag being changed/the transfer out being completed.

My domain has expired – can I transfer it out?

Before we can transfer out any hosted domain the domain needs to be in an active state. As long as your domain is shown in the domain control panel as a Purchased Domain, you can renew the domain via your BT account using the steps outlined in our domain name renewal help page.

How to transfer a .co.uk, .org.uk or .uk domain out of BT

When transferring a .co.uk, .org.uk or .uk domain out of BT you'll be asked to supply the IPS tag of your new host. A list of valid IPS tags can be found here.

We won't be able to complete the transfer out of the domain without the IPS tag.

Domains ending .co.uk, .org.uk and .uk don’t require the domain to be unlocked and don’t have an authorisation code.

Once the IPS tag has been updated to your new hosts, we no longer have access to manage the domain’s DNS settings (e.g. www, MX) on your behalf.

You’ll be advised to contact your new provider to complete the transfer in with them and set up any required DNS settings on your new host's Name Servers.

How to transfer a .com, .org, .biz, .net, .tv, .mobi, info, .uk.com, .uk.net,.eu, .eu.com domain out of BT

Upon contacting us to transfer out a .com, .org, .biz, .net, .tv, .mobi, info, .uk.com, .uk.net,.eu, .eu.com domain, BT will:

  • unlock the domain for you
  • generate and supply an auth code for the domain.
  • confirm the domain’s administration contact email address. This address can be updated if you no longer have access to the address on record for the domain.

You’ll then be responsible for submitting a 'transfer in' request with your new host using the details supplied by ourselves. Your new host will then send an approval email to the domain’s administration contact email address for you to action. Without the approval email being responded to, the transfer out cannot be completed.  The sooner the owner of the administration address responds to the approval email, the faster we can release the domain to your new host.

Can I continue to use BT’s Name Servers once the transfer out is completed?

Although our Name Servers dns1.register.com and dns2.register.com will keep any previous DNS settings live (if using them before the transfer completes), there’s no access to view/update the DNS settings for the domain via your BT domain control panel.  Your new host will be required to update the Name Servers on the domain to their own.

Can I continue to use BT for mail and web purposes once I’ve transferred my domain to another provider?

You can continue to use BT for mail and/or web purposes once you’ve transferred the registry of the domain to another provider.

The new provider will need to set up the appropriate MX record (for mail) and www, @ and ftp records (for web) once they've completed the 'transfer in' and applied their Name Servers to the domain.

I want to stop using BT for mail and/or web purposes once I’ve transferred my domain to another provider

Please contact our Customer Options Team to cancel any BT web hosting pack activated with your domain.

If you don't want to continue using BT for mail @yourdomain, you'll be asked to back up and deactivate any active mailboxes on your account. Here's how to do it:
