Staying safe in the online market place13 March 2006
Even if you have never bought or sold items on eBay, the chances are if you are an internet user that you have at least visited the online market place that has proved to be one of the web's runaway success stories.
One of the major reasons for eBay's popularity is the fact that it is a well-known site that its users trust. For most of us, when it comes to buying or selling online it is comforting to think that the operators of channels such as eBay know more about online security than we do.
However, consumer magazine Computing Which? has recently attacked the world's most famous online auction site, accusing it of doing too little to protect users from fraud. According to the magazine's editor, Jessica Ross, eBay has generated "plenty of opportunity for criminals to cash in" and "earn huge amounts defrauding everyday eBay users".
The website's operators have naturally defended their position, insisting: "eBay works extensively with law enforcement across the UK and internationally, employing a dedicated team of experts who liaise proactively with the police."
Tips for secure trading
So, just what are the measures put in place by eBay to protect its traders?
- All tangible items are automatically insured so that in the case of loss during shipping neither buyer nor seller need miss out.
- The feedback ratings system is in place to allow users to decide whether to trust a buyer or seller and therefore protect themselves.
- eBay holds buyer and seller information securely, for use in the event of a dispute.
While the site's operators take certain measures to protect users, it is essentially down to buyers and sellers as individuals to use eBay in a safe and secure way. eBay offers these tips to anyone using the online market place.
- Avoid using money transfer services, such as Western Union, as payments made this way cannot be traced.
- Do not respond to emails asking for account details as there is a risk they could be phishing messages.
- Read listings carefully before bidding to avoid buying something in error and email to ask questions about the item to ensure you get what you are looking for.
- Check user feedback and always leave accurate comments yourself - the system only works if people are honest about their experience.
- Always use a well-known secure payment process, such as PayPal, or Escrow for more expensive items. eBay's approved service is as www.escrow.com.
Products like BT's BT's Internet Trader Pack are useful ways for small businesses to sell merchandise via their website through a service that supports eBay and meets Safebuy and Trustwise UK requirements. In this way small businesses can ensure customers have confidence in the security of their websites.
