The HSE warns of fake mailshot 03 February 2005

Companies and other organisations are urged by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to ignore mailshots or emails they receive from two firms purporting to regulate health and safety legislation.

The two firms in question are the Health and Safety Registration Enforcement Division (HSRED) based in West Yorkshire and the Health and Safety Enforcement Agency (HSEA). The first of the two have written to companies asking businesses to pay up £199 to £249 to ensure they are complying with the law. The second company, using a Bradford address, previously tried to get £125 for a health and safety compliance pack and is sending out similar letters again.

The advice from the HSE is to ignore any literature that comes from these or other companies posing to be connected to the HSE. The HSE never writes indiscriminately to firms seeking advance payment for services which it has not provided.

If you'd like to gauge your performance against Health and Safety standards, why not try the new web based tool launched by the HSE. The Health and Safety Performance Indicator is designed for small and medium sized businesses operating in the UK.

By using it for self assessment, businesses can:

  • Understand how well they can spot and manage health and safety hazards in their business.
  • Find guidance on managing health and safety issues.
  • Discover how they are benchmarked against other businesses by sector and region.
  • Give insurance firms an accurate assessment of any improvements they've made in health and safety.
