BT offers different number ranges with various payment patterns to best meet customers' needs. Different payment patterns have a different balance between what the customer pays and what the recipient pays and different rules apply. For example, freephone numbers (0800 and 0808) may encourage callers. You are charged for receiving these calls, but they are free to the caller.
If you consider the bigger picture, you may identify a new, more effective approach to customer contact. It may be appropriate to differentiate between services - for example, by offering freephone numbers for enquiries that may lead to new business, and revenue-share arrangements (such as 0871 numbers) for calls when you supply something to the customer.
