New regulations for 0870 numbers

New regulations for 0870 numbers

As a result of customer dissatisfaction, Ofcom has changed the rules governing the use of 0870 dialling codes.

Changes in regulation affecting the cost of calling 0870 numbers took place on 1st August 2009. These changes have been widely publicised over the past 24 months.

This change affects the ability of an organisation to generate revenue from calls to 0870 numbers.

Your Choices

You need to consider, as soon as possible, whether to:

  • Retain your 0870 dialling code and lose revenue

  • Change to a different dialling code, for example 0844 or 0871.

  • Take the opportunity to review and improve your customer contact strategy

If you do nothing, your 0870 number will remain, but you will receive no call payment after 1st August 2009. You also will be charged for incoming calls from that date.

Changed number announcement

BT's changed number announcement (CNA) is subject to the availability of appropriate facilities. A CNA is limited to a maximum of three months.

Given the enormous volume of 0870 number changeovers, a CNA is unlikely to be available for everyone. You may therefore want to consider the parallel number special offer as an alternative. See the details of Special offers from BT on the right hand side of this page.
